Xmas decoration with diverted construction materials – DIY store hack
Every year it’s a pleasure to decorate our home before Santa Claus visit. But this time I add new game rule: create a cheap decoration with building material. DIY stores are Aladdin’s cave. They’re filled with low cost supplies just waiting to be hacked. At the end of alley, here is an excellent idea; extruded polystyrene panels. Usually used for floor insulation, they could be a great material to create large graphic letters I want since long. Let’s try together? Just 3$ a panel, it’s worth trying to make a giant letter.
And here is the result:
I wrote Ho Ho Ho in giant letter – because it’s Santa Claus laugh. Whenever I pass under, I smile, not bad at all.
Material needed to make your giant letters of Christmas:
video projector
jigsaw
glue gun
extruded polystyrene panels 30 mm thick, around 3 $ each (I used 2 for this project). You can take thicker panels depending of jigsaw blade
painting (a remnant pot is sufficient)
a few metal attaches if you wish to hang them
nylon thread
How to do it?
on th computer, I chose a free font on DaFont
I downloaded it & wrote my message
with the projector, I projected these letters on extruded polystyrene panels and traced outline
with the jigsaw, I cut out letters. Polystyrene is really easy to cut
then lightly sanded edges
and painted letters
last detail, I pressed top of each letter a metal attach and secure it with a dot of glue to suspend it with nylon thread
In less than an hour letters were finished and ready to be suspended to decorate my house. But before installing them in their final place, we had fun to use it as a décor for dolls Christmas tea time. By the way, do you recognize that flying paper crane ? If you wish to make it too, all explanations are here.
This technique could be used to create any shape with the extruded polystyrene. I was pleasantly surprised by strength and lightness of this material, so easy to cut out. Would you like to try making with giant letter ? And you, what decoration will you do for Xmas ?
